Curiosity is the product. Clothing is the artifact.
We didn't set out to make clothing.
We set out to keep a record of something we couldn't explain, and clothing turned out to be the only artifact that survived the process of writing it down.
— still being written. It started as a private index. Four people, one shared folder, no name for what we were doing yet.
Unknown Society began as a way to keep track of things that didn't fit anywhere else — symbols, patterns, half-finished theories about why certain objects hold meaning and others don't. None of it was meant to be sold. The clothing came later, almost as an accident: a way to carry the record somewhere the folder couldn't go.
MMXXII — Archive opened. What we've come to believe, filed as we believed it.
Nothing here is finished. It's filed at its current stage and left open to revision.
Attention is a form of respect. We'd rather lose a customer than explain a symbol before they've earned it.
Restraint is not the absence of ambition. It's what ambition looks like once it stops needing to prove itself.
Not everything is for everyone, and we've stopped apologizing for that.
Nothing enters the archive by accident.
We don't design seasons. We investigate ideas until they're finished being interesting, and whatever survives that process gets filed — a jacket, a mark, a number. What doesn't survive never leaves the folder.
We are not trying to be mysterious. We are trying to be honest about how little we're willing to explain.— Internal memo, undatedsomeone actually wrote this on a napkin. we kept it.
A partial timeline. The rest is still classified.
The people keeping the record. Most of them, anyway.
This record is never finished. Neither is the archive.
What you've just read is Volume IV of an ongoing document. There will be a fifth. We don't know yet what it will say — that's usually the point where we start filing something new.
